Finding a job is no easy task by any means, and that task becomes even more daunting when you have a disability. My disability is degenerative, so it becomes worse over time. When I was younger I held jobs that kept me on my feet for hours, and although it was painful, it was possible. When I graduated from college, I got to a point where it was time for me to find fulltime employment and be able to financially support myself. I was no longer able to stand for long periods of time or perform physical labor, so I was mainly applying to call centers. I had gone on one interview in which the interviewer led me through this labyrinth of a building. I expressed my inability to walk at a regular speed, but the entire time she walked several feet ahead, expecting me to keep her pace.
This world is not designed for those with disabilities and many people do not realize our limitations. I would get so anxious before interviews, because I knew that my disability would have to be addressed, but it would not be understood. After several months, I was informed of job openings for a company called InspiriTec. I applied, interviewed, went through training, and have now been employed with them for over a year, and never looked back. Maybe the world is not made for me, but that does not matter because with the help of companies like InspiriTec, I can successfully work around it.
Regardless of what limitations I have, InspiriTec has given me the opportunity to work for the Pennsylvania State Police helpdesk and to be a contributing member of society. All of the employees in my office are known by name. The work that I do is acknowledged and appreciated and has allowed me to advance into higher positions. I want to be able to improve the quality of life for others, because I understand that it is not always sunshine and rainbows, and in my own little way I am now doing that at the PSP helpdesk. On top of that, I am working towards being a more independent individual. Now that I am employed with InspiriTec, I am able to purchase devices that allow me to get around on my own. I am truly happy to work in an environment where I do not have to be embarrassed or ashamed of my disability. There are amazing people at my office. I know that as my physical state may worsen, the people at InspiriTec will support me all the way. I am proud to be a part of such an inspirational group of people.
